The 55th Session of the United Nations Human Rights Council commenced today in Geneva, Switzerland. The Session commenced with the High-Level Segment, which will continue from 26 February to 28 February 2024. Following the High-Level Segment, the general segment of the 55th Session of the Human Rights Council will continue from 28 February 2024 to 5 April 2024.
The Minister of State for Foreign Affairs, Sheryna Abdul Samad will address the Human Rights Council on 27 February 2024. In her address, State Minister Sheryna will underscore the Government’s unwavering commitment to upholding human rights, environmental sustainability, and good governance, under the leadership of President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu. She will highlight the legislative agenda, on-going reforms, and the progress achieved by the Government. Additionally, State Minister Sheryna will reaffirm Maldives' commitment to promoting and protecting human rights, emphasizing the importance of fulfilling international obligations. Furthermore, she will participate in a high-level side event on the Human Rights Situation in the Occupied Palestine Territory organized by the Permanent Mission of Palestine in Geneva later today.
In line with the Government’s key policies and priorities, the Maldives delegation will deliver national statements across various agenda items. Maldives will deliver a joint statement on Technical Assistance and Capacity Building on behalf of a group of Small Island Developing States (SIDS) based in Geneva. Moreover, together with a cross-regional core group, Maldives will present a resolution on the human right to a clean, healthy, and sustainable environment.
The Maldives delegation for the High-Level Segment of the 55th Session of the Human Rights Council will be led by the Minister of State for Foreign Affairs, Sheryna Abdul Samad. The delegation includes Chargé d’affaires of the Permanent Mission of Maldives to the United Nations Office and other International Organisations at Geneva, Dr. Salma Rasheed, as well as Counsellor Adam Hamid, Counsellor Uza. Aminath Shifaya Ibrahim, First Secretary Fathmath Razana, Second Secretary Maryam Fathika Fayaz, Attaché Raaidh Saeedh, from the Permanent Mission, and Chief Desk Officer of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Fathin Shoora Haleem.
