Maldives Signs Postgraduate Scholarship MOU with Christchurch College, University of Oxford.

19th September 2011, Male'; The Republic of Maldives has today signed an MOU with Christchurch College, University of Oxford to co-fund a scholarship each year for a student from the Maldives to undertake postgraduate study in the field of Environmental Sciences.

The scholarship will provide students of Maldivian nationality, who would otherwise be unable to afford an Oxford education, with a place at Christchurch College. The scholarship was initially discussed during His Excellency President Nasheed's visit to Oxford University in December 2010 and has now materialised into a wonderful opportunity for outstanding Maldivian students.

The scholarship will encourage Maldivians to study in the field of Environmental Sciences with a view to enhancing the Maldives' capacity to manage the specific threats the country faces from climate change. On completion of their studies the scholars will return to the Maldives with exceptional expertise in this field.

The formal MOU with the university was signed at The High Commission of the Republic of Maldives in London by Her Excellency Dr. Farahanaz Faizal, High Commissioner of the Republic of Maldives to the UK and by Mr. Simon Offen, Vice President, Christchurch Association and Deputy Development Director. Also present at the ceremony were office bearers from Maldives Student Association UK and Dr. Ali Haider as well as former High Commissioner Dr. Mohamed Asim.
