Maldives participates in the 17th Ministerial Meeting of Foreign Ministers of Non-Aligned Countries

27 May 2014, Male': Maldives is participating in the 17th Ministerial Meeting of Foreign Ministers of Non-Aligned Countries and the Senior Officials Meeting being held from 26 to 29 May 2014 at Algiers, Algeria. The Maldives delegation to the Meeting is headed by His Excellency Dr. Ali Naseer Mohamed, Foreign Secretary at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Ms. Nizwee Rasheed, Assistant Director at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.



The 17th Ministerial Meeting of Foreign Ministers of Non-Aligned Countries is set to review the progress and implementation of the Tehran Plan of Action adopted at the XVI Summit of Heads of State and Government of the Non-Aligned Movement held in 2012 in Tehran, the Islamic Republic of Iran, and to prepare for the upcoming NAM Summit in Caracas, the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela, in 2015, as well as to address existing, new and emerging issues of collective concern and interest of the Non-Aligned Movement, under the theme "Enhanced Solidarity for Peace and Prosperity". The Foreign Secretary will deliver a statement at the General Debate of the Ministerial Meeting on 28 May 2014. The statement will focus on the continued relevance of the founding principles of the Non-Aligned Movement (NAM) and the need to bring together the different expertise and knowledge to enhance solidarity for peace and prosperity.

The Non-Aligned Movement, or NAM, is an international organization of 120 states which consider themselves not formally aligned with or against any major power bloc. NAM has generally concerned itself with issues of sovereignty, territorial integrity, and security, decolonisation, racism, all forms of foreign aggression, occupation, domination, interference or hegemony. Maldives has participated in all Meetings of NAM since the 5th summit.
