Maldives High Commission in Sri Lanka Celebrates the Golden Jubilee of Independence of the Maldives

A special reception was hosted by the High Commission of Maldives in Sri Lanka on Tuesday, 21 July 2015 to commemorate the Golden Jubilee of Independence of the Maldives. The Minister of Finance of Sri Lanka, Honorable Ravi Karunanayake was the Guest of Honour at the reception.

Speaking at the reception, both High Commissioner Zahiya Zareer and Minister Ravi Karunanayake highlighted the long historical relationship between Maldives and Sri Lanka, and the close cooperation that exists in various sectors including trade, health, education and defence. They also noted that the diplomatic relations between the two countries was established on 26 July 1965, following the independence of the Maldives.

High Commissioner Zahiya Zareer also reflected on the progress of Maldives during the past 50 years, and highlighted the ambitious economic agenda of President Yameen aimed at making Maldives a robust and economically independent country.

The reception was attended by Ambassadors, diplomats, senior officials of the Sri Lankan Government, business leaders, law enforcement organizations and media.
