Maldives Engages the Commonwealth on Judicial Reform

2 February 2012, Male'; The Government has welcomed assistance from the Commonwealth to the ongoing efforts aimed at reforming and modernizing the judiciary.



Following high level discussions between the President and the Commonwealth Secretary General and further discussions between the Minister of Foreign Affairs and Secretary General Sharma and High Commissioner of Maldives in London with Deputy Secretary General, the Commonwealth has decided to extend technical expertise to the Maldives on judicial sector reform.

In her meeting with Ms.Mmasekgoa Masire-Mwamba, Deputy Secretary-General of the Commonwealth, High Commissioner Dr Farahanaz Faizal highlighted the issues surrounding judicial independence in the Maldives and briefed the Deputy SG on the recent developments in the Maldives. The discussions focused on the urgent need to modernise the Judiciary to international standards and possible Commonwealth assistance in this regard.

A long-standing developmental partner of the Maldives and a key supporter of the democratic transition, the Commonwealth continues to lend its assistance to democracy consolidation.
