The Maldives, alongside the Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR), Finland, Mauritius, and Malawi, co-convened the LDCs/SIDS Trust Fund Pledging Event at the Palais des Nations, in Geneva, Switzerland today. The pledging event successfully raised USD $238,500 to support the participation of Small Island Developing States (SIDS) and Least Developed Countries (LDCs) in effectively carrying out the work of the Human Rights Council.
The High Commissioner for Human Rights, Volker Türk graced his presence as the Chief Guest of the event. In his remarks, he underscored the importance of the Trust Fund in fostering inclusivity and amplifying the voices of SIDS and LDCs within the Council.
Speaking at the event, Permanent Representative of the Maldives to the United Nations Office in Geneva, Ambassador Dr. Salma Rasheed, emphasised the critical importance of the Trust Fund for underrepresented nations such as the Maldives. She noted that as a co-lead in establishing the Trust Fund in 2012, and a direct beneficiary, the Maldives understands the value of the Trust Fund in empowering its diplomats to actively engage in global human rights discussions. Further, Ambassador Dr. Salma Rasheed, described the Fund as “a lifeline for SIDS and LDCs, providing the skills and resources needed to amplify” LDCs and SIDS’ voices in addressing “unique challenges on a global stage”.
The Trust Fund, which was established in 2012 and has been operational since 2014, ensures that SIDS and LDCS, particularly those states without permanent representation in Geneva can effectively engage with the Council. Moreover, it has been pivotal in enhancing inclusivity and diversity in global human rights discussions, enabling states to address pressing issues and advocate for the unique challenges faced by SIDS and LDCs. To date, the Fund has supported 281 officials from 71 countries and significantly strengthened their capacity to meaningfully contribute to the Human Rights Council’s work.
As a steadfast advocate of inclusivity, the Maldives wishes to express its gratitude to all donors for their continued generosity, which has been vital to the success and sustainability of the Trust Fund. The Maldives further expresses hope that the impact of the Trust Fund continues to expand and grow, with its beneficiaries gaining valuable experience and expertise that in turn, strengthens the long-term capacity of their countries to effectively contribute to the Human Rights Council’s functions and work.
