The Government of Maldives, in collaboration with the United Nations in the Maldives, held the first meeting of the Joint Steering Committee (JSC) on 3 September 2024. This committee serves as the governing body for the United Nations Sustainable Development Cooperation Framework (UNSDCF or Cooperation Framework), a critical blueprint guiding the UN’s support for the Maldives' national development priorities for the period from 2022-2026.

Co-chaired by the His Excellency Ambassador Mr. Ahmed Shiaan and the United Nations Resident Coordinator Mr. Bradley James Busetto, the JSC includes representatives from key Government Ministries and various UN agencies, funds, and programmes operating in the Maldives. The committee convenes annually to assess progress from the previous year, address emerging challenges, review future plans, and provide strategic direction for the effective implementation of the UN Cooperation Framework.

Yesterday ’s inaugural meeting for the year focused on introducing new government representatives to the JSC and familiarizing them with the UN Cooperation Framework. Discussions included a review of achievements in 2023 and the ongoing work of 2024. Notable progress was highlighted under the results areas of Shared Prosperity and Inclusive Human Development for All, Sustainable and Climate Resilient Environment and Gender Responsive, Right Based and Accountable Governance and Justice.

The meeting also addressed the plans for the alignment of the upcoming Joint Work Plans for 2025-2026 with the Government’s new Strategic Action Plan (SAP) for 2024-2028 that is being developed. This strategic alignment will ensure that the objectives and initiatives of the UNSDCF JWP are harmonized with the national priorities and goals and fosters a cohesive framework for sustainable development. 

UN Resident Coordinator and co-chair of the JSC, Mr. Bradley James Busetto, expressed his appreciation for the active participation of the Government and stakeholders in the UNSDCF’s implementation. He urged all partners to work collaboratively and expedite progress to ensure inclusive benefits for all Maldivians that leaves no one behind. He also took the opportunity to emphasize the significant milestone of the upcoming Summit of the Future, as a critical opportunity for the Maldives to reaffirm its commitment to the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and to advance collective well-being.

The Government co-chair His Excellency Ambassador Mr. Ahmed Shiaan underlined the pivotal role of the JSC in ensuring the Cooperation Framework complements strategic priorities of the Government. He reaffirmed the Government’s commitment to work together with the UN to establish regular and structured engagement with all members of the JSC to devise sustainable solutions to persisting challenges, through the UNSDCF. He then expressed his appreciation to the Members for adding value, experience and fresh perspectives to the discussions.
