Government of Maldives Condemns threatening statements by President Nasheed

15th August 2012, Male'; Speaking at a Press Conference to brief the media, the Minister of State for Foreign Affairs Ms Dunya Maumoon condemned the threats and intimidation tactics used by President Nasheed and his MDP supporters.Ms Maumoon noted that the Government of Maldives was committed to the resolution of political differences through peaceful dialogue and the democratic boulevard and institutions available in the country.



Ms Maumoon noted that it was a matter of concern that President Nasheed speaking at the rally to commemorate August 12th/13th had said that he would take justice into his own hands whatever the findings of the CoNI.Speaking at the Artificial Beach on the night of 13th August President Nasheed noted that "the downfall of his government was clear as day and the ‘coup' had been witnessed by all. He stressed that no matter what the final verdict of the CoNI's report maybe, it would definitely find that members of the police and the military had acted outside the laws and regulations and repeatedly vowed to bring the perpetrators to justice. President Nasheed had threatened violence on the streets of Male' in order to ensure Justice.

The Minister of State in her remarks noted that ‘President Nasheed is going back on his own words and commitment to the international community that he would respect the outcome of the CoNI."She noted that the CoNI had been reconstituted to include a representative of President Nasheed and to bring it in line with international standards with the support of the Commonwealth and the United Nations. Ms Maumoon pointed out that threatening violence and intimidation would not deter the Government of Maldives or the people of Maldives in their commitment towards strengthening democracy in the country and a better future for the Maldivian people. Ms Maumoon noted that the Government was committed to providing security for all citizens and urged citizens not to be intimidated by the unacceptable language of President Nasheed and his calls to violence.

In closing State Minister Dunya Maumoon appealed to the international community to impress upon the President Nasheed to respect his commitment towards the CoNI outcome and for peaceful resolution of differences.
