22 December 2011, Male'; Minister of Foreign Affairs Mr. Ahmed Naseem today expressed concern over the increase in extremist rhetoric affecting the Maldives' international image.
Speaking at a press conference held at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Minister Naseem said that the Maldives had a lot to lose should such intolerance continue. "A large number of Maldivians travel outside the country and such rhetoric would have implications on the average Maldivian travelling abroad and those Maldivians already living abroad", said Minister Naseem.
"The Maldives is now a liberal democracy with a Constitution based upon respect for the human rights of all. As a democratic nation, each of us should be willing to listen to the views of others. It is our collective responsibility to promote equality and tolerance and to strengthen our democracy. A reversal of our democratic values could alienate the Maldives and tarnish its world renowned reputation for hospitality", said the Foreign Minister.
Concluding his statement, Minister Naseem highlighted that "Islam is a religion of dignity, peace and tolerance. Anyone who tries to use religion to incite hatred or violence is acting contrary to our national values and our Constitution".
"I call on all Maldivians to choose the path of peace and reconciliation, and to stay to the path of the traditional moderate Islam that has earned Maldives its place as a model Islamic country among the international community", said the Foreign Minister.
