The Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Maldives, His Excellency Abdulla Shahid has sent a message of condolences and sympathies to the Minister Foreign Affairs of Bangladesh, His Excellency Dr. A.K. Abdul Momen, following super cyclone Amphan, which tore through coastal Bangladesh and Eastern India.
Minister’s message reads as follows:
“I am greatly saddened to hear the tragic news of the super cyclone Amphan that tore through coastal Bangladesh and over the Bay of Bengal, causing several fatalities, destroyed entire villages and left thousands of people homeless.
We commend the excellent measures implemented by the Government and authorities of Bangladesh to mitigate and minimize the impacts of this powerful cyclone. As the country battles the trials of the COVID-19 pandemic, Cyclone Amphan would no doubt greatly compound the impacts, challenges and recovery efforts for the country.
The Government and the people of the Maldives, join me in sending our profound sympathies and condolences to Your Excellency, the Government and the people of Bangladesh. I wish for swift and successful recovery for all those affected by this disaster.
Please also convey my sincere commiserations to the members of the affected families.”
