The Minister of Foreign Affairs, Dr. Abdulla Khaleel participated in the preparatory meeting at the level of Foreign Ministers held today in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, ahead of the Extraordinary Joint Arab-Islamic Summit to be held on 11 November 2024.
In his remarks, Minister Dr. Khaleel expressed deep concern over the increased suffering of the Palestinian people, reflecting on the escalating violence and genocidal acts perpetrated by Israel. Emphasizing the collective responsibility of the Islamic Ummah in alleviating the suffering of the Palestinian people, Dr. Khaleel called for concerted action that go beyond statements of solidarity. He urged the international community to take decisive measures to hold Israel accountable for the continuous violations of international and humanitarian laws and urged countries to work across multiple platforms, including the UN Security Council and the International Court of Justice.
Minister Dr Khaleel reaffirmed the commitment of Maldives to strengthen cooperation with the Islamic countries in the pursuit of justice and peace for Palestinian people. He also noted that establishment of an independent and sovereign State of Palestine, based on the pre-1967 borders with East Jerusalem as its capital, as fundamental to achieve a lasting and just resolution to the situation.
The Joint Arab-Islamic Summit is being convened by the Government of the Kingdom of the Saudi Arabia in coordination with the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) and the League of Arab States, to address and explore actionable solutions to the ongoing sufferings of the Palestine and Lebanon.
