Dr. Asim Ahmed presents his Credentials, as Permanent Representative of Maldives, to the Director-General of the United Nations Office at Geneva

The newly appointed Permanent Representative to the United Nations Office and other International Organisation in Geneva has presented his Letter of Credence

The newly appointed Permanent Representative of the Maldives to the United Nations Office and other International Organisation in Geneva, Dr. Asim Ahmed, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary, has presented his Letter of Credence to the Director General of the United Nations Office at Geneva, Tatiana Valovaya in an official ceremony held at the Palais de Nations today.

At the ceremony, Ambassador Asim Ahmed thanked Director General Valovaya for the warm welcome and conveyed the greetings from President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih, the Government and the people of Maldives to the UN Secretary General, H.E. Mr. António Guterres, and the President’s appreciation for his leadership and the work of the UN during these challenging times. He reaffirmed the commitment of the Government of Maldives to promote and protect human rights and fundamental freedoms and to further contribute to the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals and the 2030 agenda.

Ambassador Asim Ahmed also thanked the Director General for highlighting gender parity, climate change and international economic integration as her priorities and for her concerted efforts in advocating for geographical representation in United Nations Office in Geneva. He also shared Presidents Solih’s foreign policy priorities on climate change, democracy and good governance, rule of law, human rights and gender equality and reassured the Maldives’ commitment to continue to be a leading voice for Small Island Developing States.

The President of the Republic of Maldives, His Excellency Mr Ibrahim Mohamed Solih, appointed Ambassador Asim Ahmed as the new Permanent Representative of the Maldives to the United Nations in Geneva on 10 August 2020. Prior to his appointment, Ambassador Asim Ahmed had been serving as Ambassador-at-Large at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. He had previously held the post of Minister of Education, served as the President of the Local Government Authority (LGA) and served on a number of boards, committees and high-level councils, including the National Security Council.

Ambassador Asim Ahmed completed his Bachelor of Arts (B.A) Degree at the University of South Pacific, Fiji, attained a Master of Philosophy (M.Phil.) in Development Studies from the Institute of Development Studies (IDS) at the University of Sussex, UK, and completed a Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) at the Victoria University of Wellington, New Zealand.
