Commonwealth Special Envoy calls on Foreign Minister

Male', 26 January 2013, The Special Envoy of the Secretary General of the Commonwealth to the Maldives, Sir Don McKinnon called on the Minister of Foreign Affairs H E Dr. Abdul Samad Abdullah today.



During the meeting the Foreign Minister thanked Sir Don for his continued efforts to strengthen the existing partnership between the Maldives and the Commonwealth and discussed ways of consolidating democracy in the country. On this note, discussions also focused on institution building and strengthening of democratic processes and how the Commonwealth could assist in this regard.

Minister Samad further updated Sir Don on the recent political developments including the upcoming Presidential elections and briefed him on the status of implementation of the recommendations of the CoNI Report.

Sir Don McKinnon is visiting the Maldives as part of his ongoing engagement with the Government on democracy consolidation and is scheduled to meet with senior Government officials and other political stakeholders. He is also scheduled to call on the President and the Chief Justice.
