45th Session of the United Nations Human Rights Council begins in Geneva, Switzerland

The Session is scheduled to continue for three weeks, from 14 September to 6 October

The 45th Session of the Human Rights Council begins this morning in Geneva, Switzerland. The Session is scheduled to continue for three weeks, from 14 September to 6 October. The Session will follow hybrid concept of both in person meetings and video conferencing.

The Maldives delegation will actively engage in Interactive Dialogues, Genera Debates, Panel Discussions and participate in discussions of key resolutions. The Maldives, as part of OIC and the Non-Aligned Movement, has shared concerns of the human rights atrocities that are escalating around the world and will address some of these concerns during this Session as well. In this regard, the Maldives will deliver national statements on the discussion on the issue of human rights situations in Palestine and on the Rohingya Muslim minorities in Myanmar.

The Maldives as the Co-chair and on behalf of the “Informal Group of SIDS”, along with Haiti, will also lead a cross regional Joint Statement under the Biennial panel discussion on the right to development, and General Debate Item 10 on Technical Cooperation. Maldives, with Netherlands will also deliver a Joint Statement under item 2 General Debate from the Contact Group on Council Membership. As part of the Core Group on Environment, Maldives, along with Costa Rica, Morocco, Slovenia and Switzerland will also be delivering a Core Group Joint Statement under Item 3 General Debate.

The Maldives’ priorities at the UN Human Rights Council include women’s rights, climate change and environment, and rule of law and democracy. The Maldives will actively engage and co-sponsor several resolutions at this Session.

The Maldives will be represented at the UN Human Rights Council by His Excellency Dr. Asim Ahmed, Permanent Representative of the Republic of Maldives to the United Nations Office at Geneva. The Maldives’ delegation includes Ms. Hawla Ahmed Didi, Deputy Permanent Representative of Maldives to United Nations Office at Geneva, and Ms. Shahiya Ali Manik, First Secretary, Permanent Mission of Maldives to the United Nations Office at Geneva.

The Maldives has served as a Member of the Council for 2 conservative terms of 6 years until 2016. Maldives is currently an observer member of the council. The Human Rights Council is an inter-governmental body within the United Nations system, made up of 47 members who take the responsibility for strengthening the promotion and protection of human rights around the globe.
