43rd Session of the United Nations Human Rights Council commences in Geneva

The 43rd Session of the UN Human Rights Council began today in Geneva, Switzerland. The High-Level Segment of the 43rd Session of the Human Rights Council which convened today will continue until the 26 February 2020.

The Minister of Foreign Affairs, His Excellency Abdulla Shahid, who arrived in Geneva on 23 February 2020, will address the High-Level Segment of the Session on 25 February 2020. During his visit, Minister Shahid will also co-host and participate in high level side events as well as hold bilateral meetings with foreign ministers and other high-level dignitaries. He will meet with the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights, Her Excellency Michelle Bachelet, and discuss further avenues for cooperation and collaboration with her office.

The general segment of the 43rd Session of the Human Rights Council will continue from 27 February to 20 March, following the conclusion of the High-Level Segment this week.

In line with the Government’s key policies and priorities, the Maldives delegation will co-sponsor joint statements and resolutions on a host of issues that are of importance to the Government, including resolutions on the human rights situation of the Occupied Palestinian Territories. The Maldives will also actively participate in the negotiations of several other resolutions, panel discussions, interactive dialogues and general debates.

The Maldives delegation will also be delivering a statement under Agenda Item 3, Interactive Dialogue with the Special Rapporteur on Cultural Rights as a country concerned, regarding the report issued by the Special Rapporteur after her visit to the Maldives in June last year.

The Maldives delegation for the general segment will be led by Her Excellency Dr. Hala Hameed, Permanent Representative of the Republic of Maldives to the United Nations Office at Geneva. The Permanent Representative will be accompanied by His Excellency Dr. Asim Ahmed, Ambassador-at-large at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Ms. Hawla Ahmed Didi, Deputy Permanent Representative of the Republic of Maldives to United Nations Office at Geneva, and Ms. Aminath Nahee, Legal Officer at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
