17 November 2013, Male'; The Elections Commission of Maldives has announced the preliminary results of the presidential elections held today. The preliminary results are as follows:
Abdullah Yameen Abdul Gayoom, Progressive Party of the Maldives 51.39% (111,203 votes)
Mohamed Nasheed, Maldivian Democratic Party 48.61% (105,181 votes)
Invalid2,237 votes
A total of 218,621 voters, amounting to more than 91.41% of a total of 239,165eligible voters, voted in this election. The polling day went smoothly and ended without any major incidents. A total of 3,931 observers and 3,055 monitors including 45 foreign observers and 22 foreign monitors were active during the election to ensure its credibility and transparency.
The winning candidate Abdullah Yameen Abdul Gayoom, is expected to be sworn in as the President at a special seating of the Majlis to be held tomorrow, 17 November 2013.
