The Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Maldives, His Excellency Abdulla Shahid has sent a message of condolence to the Acting Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Islamic Republic of Afghanistan, His Excellency Mohammad Haneef Atmar following the terrorist attack in Kabul that claimed at least 24 lives and wounded several.

Minister’s message reads as follows:

“The Maldives condemns in strongest terms, the terrorist attack at the Kawsar-e Danish education centre in Kabul that claimed at least 24 lives and wounded several. The targeting of innocent children and youth, at a safe space of learning for young people, is unacceptable.

I convey my deepest condolences to the families who lost their loved ones and profound sympathies to all those wounded in the dreadful attack. 

The Maldives denounces violent extremism and terrorism is all its forms and manifestations. The Government and the people of Maldives stand in solidarity with the Government and people of Afghanistan in this hour of tragedy.”

The Minister of Foreign Affairs Abdulla Shahid today, met with some of the Non Resident Ambassadors accredited to the Maldives. The meeting was held virtually. The High Commissioners of Rwanda, South Africa, and Zambia accredited to the Maldives, and High Commissioner-designate of Mauritius and Chargé d'affaires a.i. of Nigeria, took part in the meeting.

During the meeting, the Minister and the Envoys exchanged information about the evolving situation of Covid19, and enhancing bilateral and multilateral relationships between the countries. The Minister noted the close cultural and civilizational links between the Maldives and African countries, and the shared values and principles. He also thanked all the countries for the support extended to the Maldives during the Covid19 situation.

The meeting is an initiative of the Minister of Foreign Affairs, to cultivate closer relationships and interaction between the Ministry and the Representatives accredited to the Maldives.

The Ambassador of the Republic of Maldives to the Kingdom of Thailand, His Excellency Mohamed Jinah presented his Letters of Credence to His Majesty King Maha Vajiralongkorn Phra Vajiraklaochaoyuhua at a ceremony held today at the Ambara Villa, Dusit Palace, Bangkok.

At the ceremony, Ambassador Jinah conveyed greetings and best wishes from His Excellency President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih and the people of the Maldives to His Majesty and assured the commitment of the government to further enhance the close and friendly relations between the two countries.

Ambassador Jinah is the first Maldivian Ambassador to present Credentials to His Majesty the King of Thailand. Maldives established diplomatic relations with Thailand on 21 June 1979.
