Minister of Foreign Affairs, Her Excellency Dunya Maumoon has sent a message of sympathy to His Excellency Kamal Thapa, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs of Nepal, following the crash of the Tara Airlines flight which was travelling from Pokhara to Jomsom with 23 people on board.

Minister of Foreign Affairs Ms Dunya Maumoon welcomed the decision by the CMAG not to include the Maldives on its formal agenda. “Today’s decision by CMAG is an endorsement for President Yameen’s commitment and policy on democracy consolidation in the Maldives; a reassurance that the Commonwealth will continue to engage in a strong and sustainable partnership with the Government”. Minister Dunya said.

The Government of Maldives has today invited the Commonwealth Secretary-General to appoint an eminent Statesperson as a Special Envoy for the Maldives to help the country in accelerating its democratisation process. Minister of Foreign Affairs Ms Dunya Maumoon extended this invitation while briefing the Commonwealth Ministerial Action Group (CMAG) at the Group’s meeting held today in London.

United Nations Assistant Secretary General, H.E. Mr. Miroslav Jenĉa and Mr. Shin Umezu, Acting Chief of Asia and the Pacific Division at the Department of Political Affairs of the United Nations, departed from Maldives this afternoon. Mr. Jenĉa visited the Maldives on an invitation extended by the Government.
