17 December 2014, Male'; Minister of Education Ms. Aishath Shiham has thanked the Australian Government for their immense contribution towards the human resource development of the Maldives, while speaking at a reception held at Traders Hotel to congratulate the Maldivian recipients of Australia Awards Scholarships for the 2015 intake and to honour Australia Awards alumni in Maldives.

Speaking as the Chief Guest at the reception hosted by the High Commissioner of Australia to the Maldives, Ms. Robyn Mudie, Minister Shiham noted that the Australia Awards has made an invaluable contribution to capacity building in the nation and recapitulated that investing in the broader areas of education, environment, governance and public administration undeniably contributes to the overall development of the country.

Minister Shiham also congratulated all the recipients of the Australian Awards scholarships and expressed hope that they will make the best use of the opportunity, return to the Maldives and contribute towards development of the nation.

Speaking at the function, High Commissioner Mudie noted that the scholarships not only help in building capacity in the Maldives but lead to further strengthening of the close bilateral relations between the Maldives and Australia. She also read out a message from the Prime Minister of Australia, Tony Abbot on the occasion of the 10th anniversary of the Indian Ocean tsunami that caused devastation to a number of countries, including the Maldives.

The function was also attended by Minister of Environment and Energy, Mr. Thorig Ibrahim, Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs, Ms. Fathimath Inaya, Senior members of the Government and Members of Parliament.

The Government of Australia provided 33 scholarships to the Maldives for the 2015 intake. This includes 20 at the Masters Degree programs and 13 at Bachelors Degree courses in the fields of Education, Environmental Studies, and Governance and Public Administration.
