Foreign Minister Dunya Maumoon today recalled how the Maldives, as a small, poor and underdeveloped country joined the family of independent nations in 1965 amidst controversies; and reflected on the leadership role played by the Maldives on important international issues such as climate change, promotion and protection of human rights as well as the security of small states.

Minister highlighted on the achievements of Maldives journey of independence, while speaking at the reception held by the Embassy of Maldives in Japan, to mark the Golden Jubilee of Independence of the Maldives. ‘Not only did we prevail in this test, but also we have proved that small states do have a fundamental role to play in the international arena’ said Minister Dunya.

Minister Dunya also conveyed good wishes to all Maldivians residing in Japan and conveyed appreciation to the Government of Japan on the generous and continued assistance provided to the Maldives, as the largest bilateral development partner in the past 3 decades.

The reception was attended by members of the Japan – Maldives Parliamentary Friendship Leauge, Members of the National Diet of Japan, Senior officials of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Japan, Senior officials of the Embassy of Maldives in Japan and the Maldivian Community in Japan.
