13th December 2013, Male';In her message on the Book of Condolence for the late former President of South Africa Nelson Mandela, the Minister of Foreign Affairs H E Ms. Dunya Maumoon has honoured the late President's work in abolishing racism and achieving racial reconciliation in his country.

Referring to him as the "global torch bearer of human dignity, courage and hope" Minister Dunya wrote that "President Mandela proved to the world that dreams could become reality".

"Through his commitment, hard work and perseverance this revolutionary leader combatted apartheid and succeeded in dismantling apartheid in South Africa which was based on racism and denial of human rights. We in the Maldives, and in fact the whole world has much to learn from Nelson Mandela", said the Minister.

Continuing, Minister Dunya wrote, "President Mandela will continue to be a true inspiration for generations to come. His vision of a free South Africa will remain the cornerstone of his legacy… [the] principles of equality, justice and freedom are today synonymous with the name Mandela and will stay the same for years!"

The Condolence Book was placed at the Ministry for two days from 11-12th December. Senior State Dignitaries including the President His Excellency Yameen Abdul Gayoom and Vice President His Excellency Mohamed Jameel Ahmed wrote on the Book. Others including the Speaker of Parliament, Ministers and some South African nationals in Male' also penned their condolence messages.
