19 April 2012, Rome; The first Non- Resident Ambassador of the Republic of Maldives to Italy H.E. Ms. Iruthisham Adam, has presented her Letter of Credence to the President of Italy, His Excellency Mr. Giorgio Napolitano, in a ceremony held at the Quirinale Palace in Rome on 17 April 2012.
During the private audience, President Napolitano congratulated Ambassador Iruthisham Adam on her accreditation as the first Maldives Ambassador to Italy and expressed confidence that this will lead to further strengthening of the friendly relations between the Maldives and Italy. Ambassador Adam thanked the President for the warm welcome and conveyed greetings from H.E. President Dr. Mohamed Waheed and the people of the Republic of Maldives. Ambassador Adam also thanked the president and the Government of Italy for the continued assistance and corporation from Italy to the Maldives. The President and Ambassador Adam also discussed ways of further enhancing relations between the two countries through the promotion of tourism-related services and investments in renewable energy.
Ambassador Adam also briefed the President on the recent political developments in the Maldives. She reiterated the commitment of the government of the Maldives to upholding the Constitution, rule of law, and democratic values in the country. The President while stressing Italy’s strong stands on human rights welcomed the importance the Government Maldives attaches to uphold democracy and human rights in the country.
During the visit to Rome, Ambassador Adam also called on Hon. Gianfranco Fini, President of Chamber of Deputies (the Italian Speaker of Parliament) at the Parliament. She also met with H.E. Dr. Pietro Celi, Chief Executive, Ministry of Economic Development, and H.E. Nazario Pagano, President of Region Abruzzo
