Speaking at the sixth session of the Distinguished Speaker Series held by the Foreign Service institute of Maldives (FOSIM), Ambassador of Japan to the Maldives, Mr Kazumi Endo, highlighted the key achievements and highlights of the five decades long relationship. The lecture was held coinciding the 50th Anniversary celebrations of the establishment of diplomatic relations between the countries which is being marked today.

 In his remarks, he highlighted the contributions of Japan to the economic development of Maldives, as well as to the development of human resources. Speaking on the importance of people-to-people contact, he highlighted the contributions of programmes such as JOCV, and exchange programmes between Maldives and Japan. With regard to the golden jubilee celebrations, Ambassador Endo also highlighted that the future looks to be bright and that Japan would continue to be a partner for the Maldives.

 Ambassador Endo is the first resident Ambassador of Japan to the Maldives, having presented his credentials on 7 August 2016. He is a career diplomat. Having joined the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in 1979, he has served in various posts across the world – most recently as Consul General of Japan in Kolkata, India (2014-2016). His previous assignments include postings as Counsellor at the Embassies of Japan in Bangladesh (2007-2011), Italy (2003-2007), and Sri Lanka (2001-2003). Additionally, he has also served at the Embassies of Japan in India, Nepal and Sweden. At the Ministry, he was most recently the Senior Regional Coordinator in the Southwest Asia Division (2011-2014).

 FOSIM Distinguished Speaker series features notable figures both at home and abroad, and aims to create dialogue and debate on issues of strategic, and global importance among the staff of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
